Geography:
Content: SWBAT list key ideas/facts about assigned state

1. Type paper/create brochure

**We will present on Monday December 6

(below is the assignment again)

1. Task: Each student will be assigned a state to analyze and present to the class.

2. Geographic Analysis :

- Presentation of the state according to the 5 themes of Geography plus culture.

- The Presentation Requirements Outline (geographic analysis) is only a guide for the minimum requirements of the presentation. You may research more information than is found on the worksheet. Additional information may be researched outside class.

- A written copy of the geographic analysis must be provided to teacher after the presentation.

- Each of the 5 themes plus culture will be presented.

3. Map: Hand drawn map will be presented to class. Map will show important land forms and cities, bodies of water and surrounding areas. Presenter will point out all land forms telling their names. Map will be drawn on the provided poster board, using colored pencils, and markers. Map may not leave class.

4. Travel Brochure: You will be creating an original travel brochure for an assigned state. The brochure will follow the following format.

A. Fold a 12" X 18" piece of art paper in thirds.

B. When you design the front side, the left third will contain facts and pictures about the state. The right third will become the cover or title page. The state name, your full name, and any pictures, slogans, or other “eye catching” things go here. Nothing about your state should go on the center third since it will not be seen when stapled to the wall for Open House. You should design this third like an envelope as often these trifolds are mailed to customers.

C. All three thirds of the inside will contain pictures and facts about your state. You can either have them broken into 3 sections or design the page as a whole. If you choose to break it up into thirds, it is still OK to let pictures flow beyond the folded lines as long as you do it for a reason.

Below is a link to see examples of travel brochures. http://www.lospaseos.mhu.k12.ca.us/5thweb/state_brochure.htm

You will be graded on the following criteria:

a. Cover: Does it get your attention? Does it have a neatly written or typed title? Does it have a few catchy sentences about the state?

b. Neatness: Are all pictures neatly cut or drawn and fully colored? Did you do a neat job? Did you do a proper layout of the pictures? Did you think about the use of color and balance?

c. Map: Is there a state map?

d. Interesting facts about the state: Did you list at least 5 interesting facts from history or about the state? Do you have the state nickname?

e. Places to Visit: Did you include at least 5 places to visit?

f. Pictures: Did you include at least 5 pictures which you either cut out or drew yourself?

g. Originality: Was everything written by you and not just copied from other sources?

h. Format: Did you follow the format of folding and where things go as listed above?

5. One minute TV commercial: Skit designed as a TV travel commercial to motivate people to visit your state. You will lose points if you use anything profane or controversial. Props, music, sound effects and posters may be used.

6. Grading procedures: All tasks must be completed and ready for presentation by the assigned date. Grading will be competitive. Only the top presentation will be eligible to receive a 100%. All other presentations will be graded according to how well they compare with the top presentation.

- Analysis and map will be graded on completeness and detail.

- TV commercial will be graded on imagination, how well it depicts tourist information and how persuasive it is.
